Reggie Bennett has been one of the most iconic lady wrestlers of the Golden Age. She has proven once and for all that that T&A and actual in-ring prowess are not mutually exclusive. She has also made a point of the fact that being buff, strong beyond belief and massive didn’t mean a female wrestler couldn’t be overwhelmingly feminine. With all that in mind, we can safely say that Reggie Bennet (now retired) was the embodiment of a true ladies wrestling phenomenon.
Hailing from Venice Beach, California, Reggie started wrestling on the independent circuit in California. She wrestled as the Cajun Queen for a heavily gimmicked ladies wrestling promotion which featured competitors such as Rock Candy, Devious Diva and Galaxina. She came of age as a wrestler when she joined the LPWA, where she dominated the singles competition, taking smaller girls apart by virtue of not just sheer strength but well-chiseled wrestling technique as well. Despite the fact that she was just about the only one in LPWA capable to credibly destroy ladies like Denise Storm and big Judy Martin, she never held the LPWA title. In the tag team competition, she teamed with Cheryl Rusa, forming the tag team Locomotion and also with Terri Power. With Rusa being the weak link their opponents never failed to exploit, there weren’t many laurels for team Locomotion to collect.
In the LPWA, Reggie Bennet has developed her signature Reggie Rack (basically a torture rack), and the Tilt-a-Whirl Slam, which she could execute to perfection even on the largest of her opponents.
In 1994, Reggie moved to Japan where she immediately became a fan favorite of various joshi puroresu competitions and leagues. She shot TV ads in Japan and took part in some of the biggest women’s wrestling competitions ever organized there. She also gave her shoot-fighting abilities a try.
In 1997, she returned to the US to wrestle for the ECW, but that stint was a short-lived one.
She eventually returned to Japan, where she joined the ARSION promotion. Jessica Soto wrestled with her then, billed as her sister, Jessica Bennett. ARSION officials had plans to create a new style of fighting, from the combination of lucha libre style high flying and shoot-fighting-style martial arts moves.
Reggie Bennett has wrestled for video company Steelkittens too. All her work there is still available for purchase.
During the 80s, she had minor roles in some movies: Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone was one of them. She also had roles in Over the Top and Vendetta. She took part in Muscle Rock Madness and Mask de 41 a Japanese pro wrestling movie.
The last we heard about Reggie Bennett, she was married to a Japanese musician and retired from professional wrestling.
