battle royal action continues    I’ve recently found the inspiration (and the money) to pick up a LPWA video: Best of Super Ladies, Volume 1 from AllWomenWrestling.com. I’m not saying the video was cheap (or expensive) but it took a little while till I made up my mind and prepped my tight budget for the move and I must say, unlike with other female wrestling videos I’d purchased in the past, I never came to regret my decision. For your money, you get a package of 9 (nine) LPWA matches, all wrapped up into one show, including interviews by Bonni Blackstone and introductions by Ken Resnick. Make no mistake, this video is not a selection of randomly put-together matches. It is a purposely created show, where everything clicks right into place. Being that it’s the LPWA we’re talking about, there’s no tug-and-giggle choreography in the matches either. Most of the era’s top female wrestlers see action in the video. Fetching it was a cinch too: download lasted for about 15-20 minutes for me, but you have to keep in mind I have crappy bandwidth.

After download, I put the show on a USB drive and I watched it on a 32-inch Full HD LCD set, and I must say I was pleased with the quality. This is obviously a tape transfer, so you can’t expect it to be as crystal clear as today’s HD-shot quality, but it’s a shoulder and a head above anything else you can find about the LPWA anywhere out there, and you won’t miss a single detail in the action or in the ladies’ outfits (including the sheen on their pantyhose). Also, plan for a 1.5 hour break from everything if you decide to watch this video. Running 1hour and 26 minutes, it is truly massive.

If you do not wish to spoil the experience and you have your mind made up to purchase this beauty, don’t read on. The rest of the review may contain some spoilers.

Here’s what you get in the Best of Super Ladies Volume 1 LPWA package:

The show starts out with the intro (very 80-90s style) with it’s catchy music theme that you just can’t shake out of your ear once you hear it. Ken Resnick then provides a short preview on what you’re about to see, and the action gets underway with the first of the 9 matches.

simms and nasty linda    Misty Blue Simms vs Nasty Kat Laroux is the first match. Misty comes to the ring attired in an orange leotard and matte-ish tights, and takes on Nasty Kat who wears a shiny black leotard and is escorted to the ring by her tag teammate Nasty Linda (who comes to the ring with a kendo-stick). These two have obviously wrestled quite a few matches together, so you’ll see a well-oiled machine at work here. Besides the usual move-set, you’ll see fig 4 leglocks and some nasty boston crabs applied too, as Misty takes on both Nasty Girls, bodyslamming and splashing her way through the match to a conclusion I will not disclose.

No time is wasted as Resnick introduces the next match, Reggie Bennett and Terri Power vs Denis Storm and LaGata. If you like your female wrestlers big and strong, this is definitely the match for you. LaGata wears her luchadora outfit, while Denise storm rocks a lace-pattern, white leotard with tan matte pantyhose. Reggie’s outfit (she wears daisy dukes with a red top) was a bit disappointing to me, but then again, it will probably not disappoint others. The ring is truly rocked as the 3 massive women tear into each other. There are loads of power-moves in this one and Storm exhibits some spunk when she takes on both Reggie and Terri. The ending comes via an awesome powerslam which you need to see to believe.

The third match is the one between Lei Lani Kai and Shelly Francis. Both Kai and Francis wear some awesome shiny pantyhose in this one. Kai wears a leotard while Francis has her shiny pink bikini-set on. The action is hot and pillar-to-post from the very beginning, and Kai’s manager, a middle-eastern fellow (whose name now escapes me) wreaks all sort of havoc outside the ring constantly threatening with interference. Female wrestling purists will be pleased to learn he never actually interferes though. The match ends in a rather disappointing fashion (through a DQ) but it’s still a gem I’m glad to have in my collection.

The 4th match sees the beautiful (and fit) Tina Ferrari, taking on the experienced Judy Martin. Both women are dressed to kill and the action is solid all through. The ending is kind of a surprise one, which I would’ve preferred to go the other way, but you can’t have everything according to your own personal taste, plus others may well prefer it the way it is, so that’s by no means a minus.

Next, it’s Madusa Micelli (in an extremely exotic outfit) taking on the Goddess, who comes to the ring with her manager, Jonathan Blue (without shades this time). The Goddess looks a lot like Candi Devine, but one can’t be 100% certain. Given the wrestling prowess of the two girls involved, it is no surprise that the match turns out to be a very entertaining one, with Madusa up to her usual suplexes. That means of course there is plenty of bathing suit pulling, and Madusa turns on the heat by pulling on her opponent’s mask too.

She is indeed one ferocious hellcat and this match is plenty of proof to that end.

Even though she benefits from Blue’s interference, one thing is certain: I would not have liked to be in the Goddess’ place in that ring with Madusa.

The 6th match is truly one for the ages: would-be LPWA champion, SuperStar Sue Sexton takes on the Black Venus. Black Venus wears a red thong-leotard over white pantyhose, and Sexton has her star-spangled black bathing suit on with tan semi-shiny pantyhose. Needless to say, the match is a technically sound one, in which Sexton’s usually cocky attitude provides the spark. Bugaloo Brown is there by the ring-side, although he refrains from interfering. The action spills outside the ring and the end is not the kind of decisive one I personally like.

The next match is a tag team bout between Team America (Heidi Lee and Misty Blue Simms) and the Queen and his Court (Lei Lani Kai and Judy Martin aka the Glamour Girls with Queen Christopher Love). The action rocks, the outfits are hot and the finish is great and there’s a bit of humiliation in the end too, involving Heidi Lee Morgan and a bucket of yellow paint. Other than that, the only thing I can say is: Heidi Lee’s strength is nothing short of amazing.

On to match #8, in which the SuperStar comes to the ring again. This time, she wrestles Heidi Lee Morgan, whose outfit is a pretty crazy one: shiny white hose with a thong bathing suit complete with ruffles. Call it whatever you like, I loved it.

This match is a pretty awesome one, and Sue Sexton has her hands full with the small but feisty Heidi Lee. The ending is equally awesome, and this time it’s indeed a decisive one.

The match is followed by Bonnie Blackstone’s interview with LPWA commissioner Wally Carbo, after which the final bit commences.
