Women’s Wrestling Leagues/Promotions
To someone not acquainted with ladies professional wrestling, it may seem like there were hardly ever a handful of women-only wrestling promotions out there. That however, could not be further from the truth. As you can see below, ladies-only pro wrestling has always been a prolific activity, at least in regards to the number of leagues that came to be through the years. Most of the leagues presented below are defunct, but some of them are indeed active to this very day.
The interesting thing about these promotions is that they do not feature the same kind/level of action. In fact, each and every one of them has a unique brand of wrestling. Some of them, like NEFW, which is still currently active, and MLW (also active) are focused on the classic style of ladies wrestling and online video sales. Others, like DWW, are based on competitive mat action, while still others, like Shimmer and Shine, are pushing the “mainstream” envelope, and doing it quite successfully indeed. Wrestlicious was an attempt to re-create the campiness of the popular GLOW – as is WOW - while LLF brings high-flying, acrobatic action from south of the border. The Japanese leagues are all about no gimmicks, just solid hard-hitting, breath-takingly impressive wrestling, while LPWA and WWOW bring a taste of 80/90s mainstream glamour, quite unparalleled by anything else out there.
