Misty Blue Simmes
Born in 1962, Misty Blue Simmes is a true ladies’ wrestling Hall of Famer. The reasons we decided to list her here are numerous, but her overall contribution to the sport of ladies professional wrestling and her impressive lifetime achievements are obviously at the top of the list.
Diane Syms (Misty Blue’s real name) was a legit competitor in the ring indeed. She was a boxer before she took up pro wrestling. She was a member of the Saratoga Boxing Club before she was convinced by Killer Kowalski to make the transition to wrestling. She was trained by Killer Kowalski, and she had her debut match in 1985 against a lady wrestler named Michele Paris. She won her first bout and she ended up with a couple of title belts almost immediately. What followed was a whirlwind of pro wrestling success. She wrestled in the AWA, where she took part in a 10-woman battle royal.
She broke into the mainstream through the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) in 1986, and she soon had the United States Women’s Championship belt around her waist. In the NWA, she had numerous highly spectacular bouts with women like Mad Dog Debbie Irons, Nasty Kat LeRoux, Linda Dallas and Black Venus. She wouldn’t settle for her above said title though: she challenged Debbie Combs for a title unification match which may have landed her the NWA World Women’s Championship title, but the match never happened, cancelled due to interference on Cora Combs’ part.
In the NWA, she developed a special kind of ring-chemistry with the two Nasty Girls (Linda Dallas and Nasty Kat) and Heidi Lee Morgan, chemistry which would follow and aid her later in her career, during her LPWA days. Also in the NWA, she developed a feud with Jim Cornette.
She challenged AWA ladies champion Madusa Micelli to a title unification match too, but like her previous attempt against Debbie Combs, that initiative faltered too.
When the NWA discontinued its ladies division, Misty Blue Simmes hit the independent circuit before joining the LPWA. In the LPWA, she won the tag team title with Heidi Lee Morgan, forming one of the most iconic ladies wrestling tag teams ever: Team America. She spent two years in the LPWA, during which she didn’t really receive any remuneration for the work she put in there.
In the 90s, she picked up numerous title belts, defeating Linda Dallas, Black Venus and Monster Ripper in various title bouts.
An interesting piece of Misty Blue Simmes trivia is the fact that of the almost 1,000 professional wrestling singles matches she’s had in her career, she didn’t officially lose a single one, or if she did, there’s no video or any other kind of record of it.
She was pinned in the LPWA once, but the decision was later overturned by LPWA officials.
Another interesting thing about Misty Blue is that she was the hired bodyguard of the prime minister of Pakistan in 1991, while the latter toured New York.
Despite some of the financial disappointments she’s had over her career, Misty Blue never lost her love for the sport. She still sees it as a great way to travel and have fun, and she doesn’t regret any of the superflies (her favorite finisher) she’s dished out over her career, despite the physically taxing nature of the move.
